Car rental in Trieste
Pointless for the historic centre, useful for the Karst, the coast and Slovenia. Here's how to think about it.
Parking and traffic: what to know before driving in Trieste
Trieste's historic centre, square included, is largely pedestrianised or traffic-restricted, with paid parking on nearby streets. If your only goal is visiting the square, skip the car: it's an easy walk from the station. If you want to explore the Karst, Duino Castle or Slovenia independently, renting makes sense.
When it makes sense
For the Trieste Karst, Duino Castle, the coast up to Grado and Lignano, and border day trips into Slovenia — destinations best explored by car.
When it's not worth it
To stay in Trieste: the historic centre is compact and well connected on foot and by city bus, with scarce parking near the square.
