What to see at Piazza Unità d'Italia
The six landmarks of the square, one by one.
Palazzo del Municipio
Built between 1875 and 1876 in neo-Renaissance style, it dominates the square with its bell tower and the two bronze "Moors" statues striking the hours, now a symbol of the city.
Palazzo della Prefettura
The former Austro-Hungarian Government Palace, with its triangular pediment facade, today home to the Prefecture of the province of Trieste.
Palazzo del Lloyd Triestino
Built in 1883 for the historic shipping company, a symbol of the era when Trieste was the main port of the Habsburg Empire toward the East.
Fountain of the Four Continents
Completed in 1751, it celebrates with four allegorical figures Trieste's maritime trade links with Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.
Caffè degli Specchi
Opened in 1839, it is one of Italy's most celebrated historic cafes, frequented over the decades by writers such as James Joyce and Italo Svevo.
Molo Audace
Built on the remains of an Austrian ship sunk in 1904, it was the landing point of Italian troops in 1918. Today it's the best panoramic spot over the gulf.
The best time to visit the square
The square is freely accessible at any hour; the best time for photos is sunset, when the light lights up the Habsburg facades and the sea, with Molo Audace as the ideal vantage point.
